The connector is vital in determining the device’s performance in practically all electrical equipment. But sometimes, these connectors are also responsible for a specific product’s failure and damage to the equipment. This is because electrical connectors are accountable for connecting the wires and protecting them. Since they protect the cables, most electrical plug adapters are weather-resistant and waterproof to function in extreme weather conditions.
Theoretically, connectors should be resistant to factors such as oil, water, and pressure, and they should also be relatively easy to connect while confirming a secure connection when joined with other connectors. Connectors generally play diverse functions when incorporated into an electrical circuit. They join the key elements of a PCB to the board and simultaneously bring the signal/power to the system. The most important factors determining whether the connector is reliable are speed performance, reliability, ease of assembly, etc. This article will discuss the three basic types of electrical connectors used in most electrical or electronic devices we use nowadays.
8P8C Connector
The 8P8C connector has an array of 8 pins. It generally stands for “8 Positions and 8 Conductors,” which means a subsequent conductor for every position of the connector in the mating socket. Initially, the 8P8C connector, since it is a modular connector, was used for telephone jacks, but today, it is widely used in ethernet jacks.

Now, how does the 8P8C connector work? As we said, it has eight positions with eight conductors. When these conductors contact the other eight conductors in the socket, they transmit electrical pulses or signals between them. In addition, the conductors in the 8P8C connector are the male plug, and hence, they get aligned with the female conductors in the socket. Before, these connectors were used in telephone lines, but now they are used in ethernet interfacing and other communication cables.
Most modular connectors have names that are based on their positioning and conductors. For instance, 9P8C means the connector has nine positions and eight conductors.
D-Subminiature Connectors
The D-Sub or D-Subminiature connector is also a common connector type and gets its name from the D-shaped face. When the connector was introduced, it was one of the smallest computer connectors and, hence, miniature. The connector generally has two or more rows of pins, which are the male pins connected to an equal number of female pins in the socket. The connector with the male pins is called the male plug, while the acceptor is called the socket. A successful connection between them enables electricity to flow through.
USB Connectors
USB connectors are trademarked connectors and are immensely important today. Everything connects through USB today, from mobile chargers to laptop chargers, computer accessories, and flash drives. You can find two or more USB sockets on your laptop or desktop. Some of the variants of USB connectors are USB 1.0, USB 2.0, and USB 3.0. There is also a USB 4.0, which is available in the market now.
